Lawrence W. Kaplan was appointed judge to the Family Division of the Court of Common Pleas of Allegheny County in 1978. The following year, Kaplan was elected to retain the position. Early in his career, Kaplan became an advocate for mediation, a process through which contesting parties negotiate a settlement outside of the courtroom. The Kent State University Press was founded in 1965. The first director was C. Howard Allen who came to Kent State after serving as editor and director of the Western Reserve University Press from 1946 to 1958. Paul Rohmann served as the second director of the Press, after having been the director of the Antioch Press for 12 years until it folded due to financial difficulities.
